Mel is head of the Family Department. An experienced solicitor-advocate and qualified mediator with a broad knowledge of family law, including divorce, financial remedy, cohabitation, children proceedings, relocation, public law and special guardianship. Mel has a specialism in domestic and international child finance and has written articles and provided training in this area of law. She previously sat on the Resolution Committee for Child Support and is the author of International Child Maintenance and Family Obligations, a practical guide on reciprocal enforcement of maintenance.

Mel is known for being approachable, sympathetic, and determined when supporting clients in resolving issues through negotiation or court proceedings.

Notable cases - As an advocate, Mel represented a client with Tim Scott (then QC) in the high court for a case referred to the Courts of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The CJEU decided in our favour, which led to the UK changing its procedure and allowing direct enforcement of orders from foreign creditors.
